A Nanotech Solution: Controlling the Path of Light Can Brighten up our Lives

Nanoimprinting – making nanometer scale patterns on surfaces through the use of a stamp – could change the optical properties of electronic devices, making them brighter without increasing energy demand. This nanotechnology solution could also help us more safely drive our cars. A European Commission-funded project, NaPANIL (Nanopatterning, Production and Applications based on Nanoimprinting Lithography), involves 18 different partners, and has resulted in the ability to significantly increase emitted light’s intensity by controlling the light path through glass or diffusing a single ray into a homogenous illumination. The development has several different application areas, including making mobile phone displays brighter, as well as head-up displays for vehicles’ windscreens that are easy to read in all light directions. The project partners also hope to develop eco-friendly windows that can reduce the need for artificial light during the day, by redirecting sunlight to parts of buildings unreachable with regular windows.
