First principles shine a light on LED design

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs), solid-state light sources that deliver unrivalled energy efficiency, are gradually taking the place of traditional incandescent lighting. But while systems that provide warm hues of comfortably diffuse white light are now available, an element of mystery shrouds just how these LEDs function. Now, a collaboration between lighting giant Philips and physicists at the University of Twente in the Netherlands has gone back to first principles to replace numerical trial and error with a predictive approach for creating tailored LED designs…………
