Increasing value of AEC textile industry

Nanotechnology covers a wide range of technologies concerned with structures and processes on the nanometre scale. Because of its potential nanotechnology is regarded as a key technology, which will not only influence technological development in the near future, but will also have economic, social and ecological implications.

Dr. Sirasak Teparkum, Deputy Executive Director at NANOTEC this morning gave a talk on “Increasing value of AEC textile industry” at the ASEAN Garment & Textile Summit #2 “Challenges of Regional’s Garment & Textile Industry after AEC” which was held as part of GFT 2014.

“Nanotechnology can be used in engineering desired textile attributes, such as fabric softness, durability, and breath ability and in developing advanced performance characteristics, namely, water repellency, fire retardancy, antimicrobial resistance, etc in fibres, yarns and fabrics” said Dr. Sirasak.  “Enhancement of textile materials by nanotechnology is expected to become a trillion dollar industry in the next decade, with tremendous technological, economic and ecologic benefits. For this reason, it is necessary for AEC countries to engage in R&D of smart materials”.

NANOTEC recently launched its Nano Textile Flagship Program with an aim to use R&D to help increase value of Thai fabric for economic impact. The flagship program will utilize the 3 core platform technologies: Nano materials by design, Nano encapsulation and delivery system, and Nano fabrication & manufacturing process.
