UK-Thailand Partners in Science

BACKGROUND
The UK and Thailand have long enjoyed a productive history of collaboration in science and technology (S&T). Many of Thailand’s preeminent scientists began their academic and research careers at British universities and today Thailand’s universities are actively involved in joint research activities with leading UK universities.
Over the past two years a number of scientific workshops have been held in Thailand under the banner of “UK-Thailand: Partners in Science”. These include workshops focused on fuel cells, emerging infectious diseases, drug discovery, biosensors and contemporary organic synthesis which attracted over 100 participants from the UK and Thailand.
The UK-Thailand: Partners in Science Initiative has been an important first step in encouraging and promoting scientific collaboration and networking between the two countries. The success of the scientific workshops held to date has demonstrated the potential for strengthening the partnership. These workshops have successfully identified a range of collaboration opportunities which require implementation. To ensure continued success there is now a need to provide a more strategic direction and a more proactive approach to the activities being undertaken under the UK-Thailand: Partners in Science banner such that each activity is able gain maximum leverage from the activities undertaken before it.
The objectives of the next phase of UK-Thailand: Partners in Science would be two-fold: 1) To encourage scientific collaboration and networks for mutual benefit and 2)to build scientific capacity with the Thai scientific community

Activities in support of these objectives would include scientific seminars, workshops, and conferences, researcher exchange, joint research projects, fellowships, science for the public and science for youth programs, distinguished speaker series as a platform for eminent UK scientists and policy makers.

By taking the UK-Thailand partnership to this new level, it is expected that the following results will be achieved:
       strengthened international scientific capacity
       greater researcher mobility
       enhanced visibility and a greater awareness of the UK-Thailand bilateral relationship
*    increased economic cooperation

NSTDA’s role as a partner in this project will complement the work already being carried out by the British Government in the region. Building on this base, the British High Commission in Singapore and NSTDA are developing the interesting program of activities for 2010.
