If implemented industrially, this nanotechnology should help prolong machine life and improve energy efficiency.&#8221; The new method uses nanoscale polymer particles dispersed in automobile engine base oils. Tests showed that the particles have an unprecedented friction reduction capability, and perform much better than friction additives that are currently available. Dr. Liu&#8217;s discovery was able to reduce friction by 55 percent more than the currently achievable rate.
