The article details various potential applications for this emerging technology in the rubber industry, as well as outlining some of the challenges, such as the lack of nanocomposites to gain momentum, primarily due to cost issues. Nanoparticles, at present, are relatively more expensive than conventional materials. Further research is needed, and due to the heavy competition in the rubber and plastics industry, and its relatively conservative nature, dramatic results are not expected anytime soon. Still, in the long run, the positive effects of nanotechnology with respect to natural rubber, the article says, will become visible. The Government of Sri Lanka, in recognizing the importance of nanotechnology, has already established an Institute of Nanotechnology, and will be watching developments in this area.
