Reviews Safety of Rare Earth Plant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A rare earth refinery that could meet nearly a third of global demand for rare earth minerals is undergoing an investigation to see if the refinery presents any threat of radioactive pollution.\u00c2\u00a0 <!--more-->The refinery is to be located in Malaysia and is being built by Australian miner Lynas Corporation Ltd.\u00c2\u00a0 Officials say the mine could curtail China\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s monopoly on the global supply of the 17 rare earths essential for making high-technology goods, including flatscreen televisions, mobile phones, hybrid cars and weapons.\u00c2\u00a0 A panel of international experts will conduct a month-long analysis of the project\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s safety, according to Malaysian Trade Minister Mustapa Mohamed.\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;Let me assure you that the safety of the people has the highest priority,&#8221; Mustapa said. &#8220;We will never compromise the public interest in the handling of the Lynas issue, and the health and safety of our people and the environment will continue to receive the highest priority.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 The refinery will not receive government approval to operate or import any raw materials until the panel completes its assessment.<\/p>\n<p><a
