{"id":2554,"date":"2011-06-03T13:07:46","date_gmt":"2011-06-03T06:07:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nano2.toolsmkt.com\/?p=2554"},"modified":"2011-06-03T13:07:46","modified_gmt":"2011-06-03T06:07:46","slug":"from-seawater-to-freshwater-with-a-nanotechnology-filter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nanotec.or.th\/en\/from-seawater-to-freshwater-with-a-nanotechnology-filter\/","title":{"rendered":"From Seawater to Freshwater with a Nanotechnology Filter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Carbon nanotubes could provide a possible solution to the problem of the burgeoning world population demanding more and more fresh drinking water, according to Jason Reese, a professor of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics a the University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom.\u00a0 <!--more-->Worldwide demand for water is expected to increase by a third before 2030.\u00a0 Reese and his colleagues have used computer simulations to show how carbon nanotubes could be used to desalinate water.\u00a0 The team\u2019s technique is based on \u201creverse osmosis\u201d, in which water moves across a permeable membrane from a region of high solute concentration to a region with low concentration, leaving salty water clean.\u00a0 The pressure needed to make reverse osmosis work usually results in a process that is incredibly inefficient, making desalination too expensive.\u00a0 Reese has shown that the use of carbon nanotubes results in water permeability 20 times that of conventional reverse osmosis membranes, greatly reducing the cost and energy required for desalination.\u00a0 Reese says, &#8220;The holy grail of reverse-osmosis desalination is combining high water-transport rates with efficient salt-ion rejection.
