{"id":29386,"date":"2011-06-23T12:08:31","date_gmt":"2011-06-23T05:08:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nano2.toolsmkt.com\/?p=2713"},"modified":"2011-06-23T12:08:31","modified_gmt":"2011-06-23T05:08:31","slug":"nanoparticles-disguised-as-red-blood-cells-will-deliver-cancer-fighting-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nanotec.or.th\/en\/nanoparticles-disguised-as-red-blood-cells-will-deliver-cancer-fighting-drugs\/","title":{"rendered":"Nanoparticles Disguised as Red Blood Cells Will Deliver Cancer-Fighting Drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, United States, have developed a method of disguising nanoparticles as red blood cells by collecting membranes from a red blood cell and wrapping it around a biodegradeable polymer nanoparticle stuffed with a cocktail of small molecule drugs.\u00a0 <!--more-->The method will enable the nanoparticles to evade the body\u2019s immune system and deliver cancer-fighting drugs straight to the tumor.\u00a0 According to Liangfang Zhang, a nanoeningeering professor, \u201cThis is the first work that combines the natural cell membrane with a synthetic nanoparticle for drug delivery applications.\u00a0 This nanoparticle platform will have little risk of immune response.\u201d Current \u201cstealth\u201d nanoparticles can circulate in the body for hours, but Zhang\u2019s study found that the nanoparticles coated in the membranes of red blood cells circulated in the bodies of lab mice for nearly two days.\u00a0 \u201cWe approached this problem from an engineering point of view and bypassed all of this fundamental biology,\u201d said Zhang. \u201cIf the red blood cell has such a feature and we know that it has something to do with the membrane &#8212; although we don\u2019t fully understand exactly what is going on at the protein level &#8212; we just take the whole membrane.
