{"id":29395,"date":"2011-07-19T09:28:20","date_gmt":"2011-07-19T02:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nano2.toolsmkt.com\/?p=2831"},"modified":"2011-07-19T09:28:20","modified_gmt":"2011-07-19T02:28:20","slug":"graphite-water-the-future-of-energy-storage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nanotec.or.th\/en\/graphite-water-the-future-of-energy-storage\/","title":{"rendered":"Graphite + Water = the Future of Energy Storage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at the University of Monash, Australia, have found that a combination of two ordinary materials \u2013 graphite and water \u2013 could produce energy storage systems that perform at the same level as lithium ion batteries.<!--more-->\u00a0The new batteries could, however, recharge in a matter of seconds and have an almost indefinite lifespan. Dr. Dan Li said graphene could form the basis of the next generation of ultrafast energy storage systems. \u201cThe reason graphene isn\u2019t being used everywhere is that these very thin sheets, when stacked into a usable macrostructure, immediately bond together, reforming graphite. When graphene restacks, most of the surface area is lost and it doesn\u2019t behave like graphene anymore.\u201d Dr. Li and his team discovered that the key to maintaining the remarkable properties of graphene is water. Keeping the graphene moist prevents re-stacking, making it ready for real-world applications. \u201cThe technique is very simple and can easily be scaled up. When we discovered it, we thought it was unbelievable. We\u2019re taking two basic, inexpensive materials \u2013 water and graphite \u2013 and making this new nanomaterial with amazing properties,\u201d said Dr Li.
