The new device, which is very much like the protein motors found in biological cells, might be used to design artificial molecular machines similar to those found in nature. Such machines could be important for applications such as synthetic muscles, nano- and micro-robots and advanced mechanical motors&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/nanotechweb.org\/cws\/article\/tech\/65220<\/p>\n<div class=\"articleBody\">\n<div class=\"articleThumbnailLeft\"><a class=\"thickbox\" title=\"The device comprises a small molecular ring (benzylic amide macrocycle \u2013 shown in blue) that continuously moves around a cyclic molecular track (green) when powered by irreversible reactions of Fmoc-Cl. Key to the design is that the rate of reaction of this fuel with reactive sites on the cyclic track is faster when the macrocycle is far from the site than when it is near to it. The position of the ring on the track determines the (kinetic) rate at which a bulky pyridine group (red)  adds itself onto the ring. Once added, the bulky group blocks the ring and prevents it from moving backwards. This type of mechanism is called an &quot;information ratchet&quot;.
