Metallic nanowires (NWs) have been one of the most studied families of nanostructures. The mechanical stretching of these structures has led to the discovery of the ultimate wire, a suspended linear atomic chain (LAC). These one-atom thick structures represent the ideal physical system for studying size effects and low-dimensional physics.
