Strong exchange coupling lets exchange bias fade

Researchers from the University of Leipzig and the Max-Planck-Institute in Halle are using atomically controlled pulsed laser deposition to tailor the exchange bias in ferromagnetic superlattices. Inserting various oxide interlayers between two different oxide ferromagnets in multilayers allows the team to tune the interfacial exchange coupling and in turn manipulate the exchange bias, an effect responsible for the function of every hard-disk read head.
