South Africa will host the continent’s first Nanomedicine workshop, to be held in Magaliesberg from March 27 to 31, 2011. The workshop, “Nanomedicine for Infectious Diseases of Poverty – Perspectives and Possibilities”, is being hosted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology. Approximately 14 million people are estimated to die annually due to poverty related diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, human African trypanosomiasis, chagas disease, as well as HIV and Aids. Leading researchers in nanomedicine from developed countries have been invited to join top African researchers working on therapies against these diseases. African politicians and decision-makers that directly affect research, as well as representatives from the United Nations, World Health Organization, European Union and the African Union, have also been invited to participate.
