Etched nanoparticles both catalyse and track reactions

The advantages that nanostructures offer for both catalysis and resonantly enhanced sensing have been known for decades. But it has been difficult to achieve both functions with one structure because of the difference in particle size needed to optimize each effect. Now advances in nanofabrication and patterning mean scientists can etch noble metal nanoparticles into shapes that allow both enhanced sensing and catalysis, opening a route for tracking the dynamics of catalysed chemical reactions…………
