This article explores nanotechnology and nanoscience work being conducted in Colombia. The country recently installed a new National Centre for Nanotechnology and Energy in Medellin, and initiated a global network of nanotechnology and its applications to road materials and pavements, which is headquartered in Colombia and the United States. Dr. Jorge Reynols announced the development of a nano-pacemaker that could be implanted in humans in three years time. The academic world of nanoscience is also active. A nano-education course in the spring of 2011 attracted 1,500 students throughout the country. Professor Alba Avila said the University of the Andes has invested millions of dollars in a clean room and state-of-the-art research equipment for nanotechnology. Professor Felipe Muñoz Giraldo, also with the University of the Andes, contributes to nanotoxicology and risk assessment research with his studies.
