Going it alone: new dichalcogenide behaves like a monolayer

A new 2D material called rhenium disulphide, which belongs to the family of semiconducting layered transition metal dichalcogenides but which behaves as though it is a pure monolayer, has been discovered by an international team of researchers. The discovery means that it could now be possible to study fundamental 2D physics in ordinary, easy to prepare 3D crystals. The material might also find use in novel optoelectronics and low-friction applications……….
