NSTDA, through NANOTEC, Delivers Two Innovations to Support Flood Victims

Promoting Cleanliness and Mosquito Protection During Post-Flood Recovery

The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), through the National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC) under the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), is bringing research-based innovations to support relief and recovery efforts for flood-affected communities.

The handover involved two innovations: “N-Zyme Clean,” an enzyme-based cleaning and disinfecting solution, and “Laai,” a nanotechnology-based mosquito repellent spray. Prof. Dr. Siwaporn Meeju Smith, Acting Deputy Executive Director of NANOTEC; Dr. Warayut Sajomsang, Head of the Environmental Nanotechnology Research Team, Nanocatalysis, Adsorption and Computation Research Group (NCAS); and Ms. Supinya Uplakalin, Director of Business Development and Industrial Services, participated in the handover. N-Zyme Clean was developed by applying NSTDA research expertise in response to the needs of Manochi Industry Co., Ltd., while Laai was developed for commercialization by Bio Inno Tech (Thailand) Co., Ltd. Mr. Atthakorn Sirisuwan, Director of Public Relations at NSTDA, received the products on behalf of the agency. The donated products will be consolidated and distributed to flood victims through MHESI’s collaborative relief efforts.

N-Zyme Clean: An Enzyme-Based Cleaning and Disinfecting Solution .

N-Zyme Clean was developed by an NSTDA research team using enzyme technology to formulate a surface-cleaning solution capable of tackling various types of stains and contaminants, including proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. The formulation combines four enzymes—amylase, cellulase, lipase, and protease—with a disinfectant to enhance stain removal while providing disinfection. . The product has undergone testing and has been found not to cause surface corrosion. Its antibacterial efficacy against three bacterial species has also been evaluated in accordance with AOAC Official Methods, using a contact time of 10 minutes and a dilution ratio of one part product to 49 parts water. In addition, the formulation offers high stability, with a shelf life of up to two years. . This innovation creates opportunities to develop domestically manufactured cleaning and disinfecting products. The formulation has been optimized for commercially available enzyme sources that can be sourced within Thailand and is designed to accommodate use with a variety of automatic cleaning machines. These features offer the potential to reduce reliance on imported products. During post-flood recovery, the solution may also be applied to suitable surfaces, provided that the surface material and type of contamination are taken into consideration and the product instructions are followed carefully. . SKINSOFTT Mosquito Repellent Spray, available in herbal and DEET-free formulations, is another research innovation developed by the National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), with the technology transferred to VO Innovation Co., Ltd. . The research focuses on the development of an encapsulation system for icaridin, an active ingredient that provides longer-lasting mosquito repellency than conventional mosquito repellent products. By employing Nanoencapsulation Technology and developing a nanoemulsion formulation, the technology enables effective control over the encapsulation and release of the active ingredient, providing protection against Culex mosquitoes for up to seven hours. . The product is formulated without hazardous chemicals and is gentle on the skin, making it suitable for everyday mosquito-bite prevention. It may also be useful during post-flood recovery, when residents may need to clean their homes and manage belongings affected by floodwaters. Users should follow the product label and usage instructions strictly. . The delivery of these two innovations underscores NSTDA and NANOTEC’s commitment to translating scientific knowledge and technological research into products that address public needs. By connecting research with the private sector and government relief mechanisms, the initiative enables Thai technologies to contribute to public hygiene and quality of life in both normal circumstances and emergency situations. . NSTDA and NANOTEC will continue to develop practical innovations, expand their applications for societal benefit, and strengthen Thailand’s preparedness for future disasters.
