NANOTEC partners UNITAR to promote nano-safety awareness in Thailand

The National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC) has signed a collaborative agreement with the United Nation Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) to promote training and capacity building for the development of nano-safety pilot project in Thailand.

Prof. Sirirurg Songsivilai

“The phase 1 of the public awareness campaign will be for 18 months” said Prof. Sirirurg Songsivilai, Executive Director, NANOTEC. “We will work with our local partners to undertake training and capacity building initiatives to support public awareness of nano-safety. It is important that the public feels a sense of ownership if this public awareness campaign is to be successful”.

“Both NANOTEC and UNITAR recognize the importance of nano-safety as a key tool for protecting the health of people and the environment in Thailand” said Jonathan Krueger, Acting Programme Manager, Chemicals and Waste Management Programme (CWM), UNITAR. “In order to be effective, we must address human resource development issues regarding nano-safety and the broader need to strengthen national capacities for management of toxic and dangerous products”. The training and capacity building projects will cover the following activities:

  •  Establishment of a Nano Safety Project Committee to support coordination efforts.
  • Project Inception and Nano Awarness Workshop
  • Updating the National profile with a Nano Safety Chapter
  • Development of Elements of National Nano safety Policy
  • Targeted Nano safety Training
  • Endorsement Workshop
  • Project Monitoring and Evaluation
