Pocket K No. 39: Nanotechnology in Agriculture

The International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA), a not-for-profit international organization that shares the benefits of crop biotechnology to various stakeholders, particularly resource-poor farmers in developing countries, has issued a new publication, “Pocket K No. 39: Nanotechnology in Agriculture”.  The publication has three sections: Nanotechnology for Crop Biotechnology; Nanoparticles and Recycling Agricultural Waste; and, Nanotech delivery systems for Pests, Nutrients, and Plant Hormones.  Nanotechnology is, according to the ISAAA, considered as one of the possible solutions to problems in food and agriculture.  Issues of safety on health, biodiversity and the environment, as well as appropriate regulation, are all to be considered, but, they note, nanotechnology products such as anti-bacterial dressings, stain-resistant fabrics and suntan lotions have long been commercially available.
