Switching on magnetism with an electric field

Being able to control magnetism in materials using only an applied voltage will be important for low-power spintronics applications in the future. Although much progress has been made in this field, it has proved difficult to switch ferromagnetism off and on at room temperature. A team of researchers in France and Germany are now saying that they have managed to do just this in FeRh films, which go from being antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic after being exposed to just a few volts……..
