Adding properties of bed nets through appropriate nanotechnology

Prof. Sirirurg at JITMM2010 & IMC2010

“Insecticide-impregnated mosquito net is one of the most important tools in controlling malaria and insect-borne diseases” said Prof. Sirirurg Songsivilai, Executive Director NANOTEC at the recent JITMM2010 & IMC2010 “Joint International Tropical Medicine Meeting 2010, and the International Malaria Colloquuim 2010” conference in Bangkok. Prof. Sirirurg’s talk entitled “Adding properties of bed nets through appropriate nanotechnology” gave accounts of how the application of nanotechnology can improve the quality and effectiveness of bed nets. Anti-mosquito fibers and coatings are the main focuses of this technology-based product development program. “Currently, NANOTEC is doing mosquito repellent test on bed nets based on WHO standard method” said Prof. Sirirurg. “In addition, we are also discussing technology transfer with industries for industrial scale production and at the same time completing the risk assessment”.

JITMM2010 & IMC2010 attracts world leaders in all aspects of tropical medicine and tropical health every year, and has thus justifiably become a “must-attend” event in the calendar of tropical medicine specialists everywhere.
