Report on Thailand status of nanotechnology development at 4th WIFE-UiTM Global Discourse on Nanotechnology

Recently Prof. Sirirurg Songsivilai, Executive Director of NANOTEC was invited to participate as both speaker and panelist at the 4th WIFE-UiTM Global Discourse on Nanotechnology organized by the World Islamic Economic Forum Foundation (WIFE) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Over 170 people from private, public, and the academia attended this event.

“The National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) under the Ministry of Science and Technology is the key player in promoting science and technology activities in Thailand” said Prof. Sirirurg during his speech on the status of nanotechnology development in Thailand. Prof. Sirirurg went on to inform that, NANOTEC has a dual role of serving as both a national R&D centre and as a funding agency to support universities and other research institutes. The center have established strong links with eight leading universities in Thailand which is known as Centers of Excellence in Nanotechnology (COEs), and with more than 400 nanotechnology researchers, as well as with leading nanotechnology centres overseas.

The 4th WIEF-UiTM Global Discourse would focus on nanotechnology’s interdisciplinary nature, highlighting cutting-edge R&D in nanomedicine, nanoelectronics, and nanomaterials. The discussions will explore the current factors fueling nanotechnology’s growth, start-up opportunities and potential bottlenecks to viable commercialization. It will also examine predictions for future societal, environmental, ethical, and privacy issues as well as the impact of nanotechnology on the future warfare.
